Our History

1976, 1996, 2006. To understand what the Vento Ariel restaurant is today you have to go back over the years and trace the history of a family... the Groppi family. It’s well known that the call of the sea can be irresistible and in 1976 they moved from Turin to Camogli. The head of the family, Elio Groppi, and his wife Cristina, arrived at this seaside town with their two children, Davide (aged 6) and Ombretta (aged 3) and began by running a number of businesses in the beautiful district of Golfo Paradiso [Paradise Cove], before settling in their “home port” when they took over the management of the famous Gatto Nero restaurant, at 32 Piazza Colombo. In 1996, there came a second turning point: Davide, by now passionately enthusiastic about the restaurant business, became the sole manager of the Gatto Nero, changing its name to Porto Prego and thus leaving his father, Elio, free to tackle another challenge: he had bought the Vento Ariel restaurant in Calata Porto, overlooking Camogli’s tiny harbour.
For ten years there was a kind of family rivalry between Davide at the Porto Prego and Elio at the helm of the Vento Ariel restaurant. Then, in February 2006, Davide Groppi left Porto Prego to concentrate his energies on the Vento Ariel restaurant, bringing a touch of youth and original expertise to recipes his father, Elio, and mother, Cristina, had already refined to the point of simple elegance. Together, day after day, parents and son continue to delight the palates of everyone who calls in to experience the authentic dishes served up in the true Vento Ariel tradition.
